Barto, a Vermont native, was an Elgin, Illinois lawyer when he enlisted as a second lieutenant in Company K, 52nd Illinois Infantry in August 1861. He was promoted to captain in October 1862 and mustered out in October 1864. He was married to Harriet E. Hitchcock from October 12, 1854 to her death on November 22, 1865.
